CloseThe final letter of Jesus to the Seven Churches of Revelation it to Laodicea. Jesus gives them no compliments; nothing good to be said about them however, no other letter offers as much grace as this one does. Laodicea has become almost a universal symbol of lukewarmness, being neither spiritually hot nor cold. It appears that they felt quite self-satisfied, feeling they are rich, prosperous, and needing nothing. Yet the Jesus whose eyes penetrate beyond the surface into reality sees that they are quite the opposite of what they think they are. He sees the uncomfortable truth. But it is totally out of love that Jesus levels his criticism. He does not enjoy seeing his Church, in pain and calls their attention to their sickness so they may be healed. Jesus offers the gift of the purest gold, spotless garments and authentic medicine to replace their poverty, shame and blindness. So, for us too, Jesus offers everything we need because He completely loves us.
