CloseWho wants to be happy? Just about everyone. Jesus offers blessedness, which is the deepest kind of happiness. The Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount seem to flip upside down the conventional thinking about happiness. And in Jesus’ view poverty, mourning, powerlessness, hunger and thirst and persecution are critical steps on the path of happiness, or blessedness. To the world it seems that Jesus offers only a sure path to failure and misery. Yet it is the road to the only success that matters. It is founded on the most profound yet puzzling truth in the universe: only the beggars inherit the Kingdom of God. It’s a matter of radical grace.
