CloseSt. Paul wrote to the Christians in Philippi (Philippians 2:1-11) that Jesus emptied himself and took on the form of a slave, was born in the likeness of men and humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Yet in all of this, the gentle and humble Jesus was on a mission to save humanity. Even when he is arrested, bound, beaten, stripped, humiliated he is a Giant, a Hero. The greatness is still his but is hidden and eclipsed just as the brilliant sun continues to shine behind clouds or the shadow of the moon. In that condition Jesus had first to suffer what to us is unimaginable agony, to spare us from the agony of eternal separation from God. Jesus appeared to be defeated by death on the cross, but that was his victory that overcame death for us, and everything connected with it.
