CloseThe second coming of Christ and the last judgment have been the subject of some of the world’s greatest classical art, including Michaelangelo’s fresco behind the altar in the Sistine Chapel. The scene is in parts frightening, particularly the depiction of the suffering of the damned. At points it is gruesome, such as St. Bartholomew having been martyred by skinning. But the high point is seen in the joy of the redeemed as they meet their Savior and are claimed as his very own sheep. The biblical word picture is even more vivid, including the very words of Jesus the King and Judge, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father! Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” I am excited that I will be privileged to hear those very words one day.
