CloseThe death of Jesus was designed for maximum pain and maximum humiliation. Every detail speaks of agony and degradation. His cry from the cross “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me” testifies to this. What the enemies of Jesus meant to be an instrument of torture became the instrument of salvation, and so we can do at St. Paul did, who said he could boast “in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Because of what Jesus accomplished for us on that cross, as certified by the resurrection, the cross becomes an object of beauty to our eyes. We cherish that “Old Rugged Cross.”
