CloseJesus told a series of 3 parables in a row. They were about a lost sheep, a lost coin, and a lost son. In each case the lost is found and is restored to its rightful place. The lost son had left home under less than perfect circumstances. His life takes a downward spiral of self-indulgence until he reaches bottom. He has nowhere more to run away to. So, he turns his heart toward home as a last resort after trying out all the alternatives. Would he be welcome? He was expecting what he deserved, and the most he thought he could hope for was to get the lowest level job at the home place – if his family would allow even that. Surprise! He is welcomed joyfully by the father. There was nothing the boy could do make his father stop loving him and there was nothing he could do to make his father love him. He was even given a place at the family table. Even more than that! That’s the grace God extends to his beloved children.
