CloseWhen we think of the parables of Jesus, we might think of a farmer planting seeds in a field, or a Good Samaritan, or a priceless pearl. In each parable Jesus is both hiding and revealing profound truth about the workings of God. To hearts that are closed, the mysteries remain opaque and mysterious. To hearts opened to the grace of God, rich mysteries are brought to light. Jesus moves from the known into the unknown. He uses things in the physical, phenomenal world to draw us into the spiritual. The parables challenge us and frequently lay bare our failings and pride. If we look closely at the parables, we can see ourselves in every one of them. Not often are we the heroes.
